And while it may seem that froyo is as good or better than regular ice cream for your waistline and health, many people are still wary about eating it because they think it’s not as healthy. So let’s take a closer look at what makes up each type of dessert so you can decide which is really more nutritious and less harmful to your body.
A glance at their ingredients list reveals some important differences between frozen yogurt and ice cream: Frozen yogurt contains live active cultures—a probiotic that helps promote healthy digestion and immunity; ice cream typically does not.

You can start with the basic vanilla or old-fashioned flavor recipes that are online, especially ones that have high ratings. One of my favorite recipes is for Chocolate Frozen Yogurt. It’s very easy to make and tastes like chocolate ice cream!
The main ingredients in frozen yogurt are milk, sugar, and some type of thickening agents like pectin or fruit puree. I recommend using a spoonful of your favorite jelly or jam as the sweetener and berry as the fruit puree. You can also add ginger or cinnamon to enhance the flavor of the frozen yogurt.
Make sure to read the recipe completely and then gather your tools. A gallon of milk, a large pot, a candy thermometer for cooking the mixture, tall glasses or mason jars and lids, a wooden spoon for stirring the dessert as it freezes, rubber gloves so that you won’t burn your hands when handling hot glass containers (if using), and an ice cream maker with paddle attachment are all things that you’ll need to help make frozen yogurt at home.
Mix up the thickening agent into about 2 cups of cold water in a medium saucepan. Then add 1 cup of sugar and bring to boil on high heat until mixture reaches 234 degrees Fahrenheit/115 degrees Celsius. Stir more frequently as the temperature rises.
When the mixture reaches the right temperature, turn off the heat and let it stand until it cools down to 110 degrees Fahrenheit- about 30 minutes. Then add 1 gallon of whole milk (the kind you’d drink, not the non-fat/low-fat variety). You can also use low or reduced-fat milk if you prefer. Stir with a whisk or wooden spoon.
Once all ingredients are incorporated together, pour into tall glasses or mason jars for freezing. To keep frozen yogurt from becoming too watery as it freezes, make sure to leave at least 2 inches at the top of each glass for expansion during the freezing process.
Now just place it in an ice cream maker that has a paddle attachment and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You should have homemade frozen yogurt in about 20 to 25 minutes!

Some sources will tell you frozen yogurt is the best option and others will say ice cream is best. Which one should you eat if you’re looking to maintain your current weight-loss goal?
It depends on whether or not you’re trying to lose weight or gain muscle mass. If your goal is to maintain the same body shape, then it doesn’t matter what food you consume as long as it’s low in calories, sugar, fat, etc.
If your goal is to lose weight, then you should eat whatever you enjoy that is low in calories and high in fiber. Low-fat frozen yogurt might be a good option because it contains fewer calories than ice cream. However, if lowering fat intake isn’t completely necessary for your diet, low sugar or all-natural ice cream would be a better choice since both are lower in calories but high in sugar and carbs.
